Mind Training Behind Bars is our prison meditation initiative, bringing meditation and mental health programs to incarcerated people across the country. All programs are free to access through prison tablet systems

Contributor Bios

Dr. Arielle Schwartz

Arielle Schwartz, PhD, CCTP-II, E-RYT, is a licensed clinical psychologist, certified complex trauma professional, EMDR consultant, and Kripalu yoga teacher based in Boulder, Colorado. She is the founder of the Center for Resilience Informed Therapy and the author of eight books, among them The Complex PTSD Workbook, EMDR Therapy and Somatic Psychology, The Post-Traumatic Growth Guidebook, and Applied Polyvagal Theory in Yoga.

Her model, Resilience Informed Therapy, draws on applied polyvagal theory, somatic psychology, EMDR, parts-work therapy, relational psychotherapy, and therapeutic yoga. She has spent more than twenty years treating post-traumatic stress with an emphasis on resilience and post-traumatic growth, and she teaches clinicians internationally through the Polyvagal Institute, PESI, Psychotherapy Networker, and others. Dr. Stephen Porges, whose work she has helped translate into clinical practice, has publicly praised her contributions.

Samaneri Jayasāra

Samaneri Jayasāra is the creator of Wisdom of the Masters, a widely followed YouTube channel and podcast of recorded readings drawn from the world's great contemplative texts.

She has studied and practiced Buddhism and meditation for over thirty-five years. She holds a PhD and a Master's degree in education focused on comparative spiritual traditions, Buddhism, and psychotherapy, and has taught psychology and counseling at secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels, as well as working as a trainer in mental health and crisis intervention.

She first ordained as an anagārikā in the Theravada Forest Tradition in 2002, living at Dhammasara monastery in Western Australia and at Amaravati and Cittaviveka in the UK. She re-entered monastic life as a samaneri, a ten-precept nun, in 2018 at Santi Forest Monastery. In 2021 she moved to Viveka Hermitage in southern New South Wales, Australia, where she continues to practice and to produce her recordings.

Dr. Ben Cohen

Ben Cohen, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with more than thirty years of experience in couples counseling and psychotherapy, practicing in Boulder, Colorado and the San Diego area. He was certified in Imago Relationship Therapy in 1994, is a Certified Imago Instructor, and served as Co-Dean of the Faculty at Imago Relationships International. He has led over a hundred "Getting the Love You Want" couples workshops and has trained therapists nationally and internationally in the Imago approach.

He was Training Director at the University of Colorado Boulder and taught for ten years as adjunct faculty at Naropa University. His work brings together the Imago dialogue process with mindfulness and intention, helping couples move from conflict to connection. He has practiced meditation since 1987 and considers the Plum Village tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh his spiritual home.

Bill Belanger, M.A.

Bill Belanger, M.A., holds a Master's in Counseling Psychology and trained as an individual and group psychotherapist. His clinical training includes Internal Family Systems, Voice Dialogue, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, attachment theory, and somatic approaches, with a particular interest in how parts work intersects with traditional contemplative practice.

He has practiced and studied across multiple contemplative traditions for about twenty years, including the Kagyu, Nyingma, Gelug, and Bon lineages of Tibetan Buddhism as well as Zen and Theravada, with an emphasis on Mahamudra and Dzogchen. For a decade he trained under the late Dr. Daniel P. Brown of Harvard Medical School.

He is also the founder of Mind Training Behind Bars and the Center for Mixed Contemplative Arts. He is the founder and CEO of Healbright, a workplace mental wellness company delivering clinical mental health education to organizations.
